Kitten First Year
A Kitten's First Year, Mapped
Editorial team · Published October 20, 2026
A kitten's first year moves fast, and the milestones arrive in a predictable order. The RSPCA's kitten care guidance lays the year out in stages - here's the map, so you can see what's coming before it arrives.
Up to 8 weeks: before your kitten comes home
In the earliest weeks, the action is mostly with the breeder or rescue - but it's your preparation window. The RSPCA's checklist for this stage includes organising the first kitten vaccinations and finding a vet. If you're still choosing a kitten, this is also the stage when the socialisation window (two to eight weeks, per Cats Protection) is open - ask what people, sounds, and handling your kitten has already met.
8 to 12 weeks: coming home
Homecoming stage. The RSPCA's focus here is careful introductions: your kitten can meet other healthy, fully vaccinated cats and dogs, plus other people and children. Keep the world small at first - a room of their own, then the run of more of the house as confidence grows - and keep routines predictable while they learn the household.
12 weeks onwards: the healthcare year
The RSPCA's checklist for this stage is medically busy, in a routine way:
- Second vaccinations around 12 weeks.
- Neutering - the RSPCA suggests booking at around four months.
- Worming - ask your vet what's right for your kitten.
- Diet changes - ask about your kitten's changing dietary needs as they grow.
- Behaviour - raise any concerns with your vet early rather than waiting.
Your vet owns the actual timing - treat this as the map, and your vet's plan as the route.
Why write any of this down?
Because the first year generates paperwork: vaccine records, weights, dates, diet changes, the name of the food they actually eat. Six months in, "when was that second vaccination?" is a question with real consequences - boarding catteries, insurers, and vets all ask. A record kept as you go beats a reconstruction every time.
Keep the year in PawLine
Milestones, dates, weights, questions for the next visit - you can find a home for the whole first year in the PawLine app. Add each event as it happens, and by the time your kitten is a cat you'll have their complete first year in your pocket. You can find this in the PawLine app.
